Muhsin Hendricks was born in Cape Town in June 1967. He became known as the world’s first openly gay imam, working to support LGBTQ+ Muslims. In 1996, he publicly shared that he was gay, a brave step that made him both respected and criticized.
He founded The Inner Circle, an organization that helped LGBTQ+ Muslims find acceptance and community. In 2011, he started Masjidul Ghurbaah, a mosque in Cape Town that welcomed all people, regardless of gender or sexuality. His goal was to make Islam a religion of love and acceptance for everyone.
Hendricks was shot near Gqeberha, South Africa. According to reports, two masked gunmen stopped his car and fired multiple shots before escaping. Authorities are investigating the case, and many believe it could be a hate crime.
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, and Intersex Association (ILGA) expressed deep sadness over his death and called for a full investigation. Many human rights organizations have also demanded justice.
Despite receiving threats throughout his life, Muhsin Hendricks continued his mission to spread kindness and inclusivity in Islam. His work helped many LGBTQ+ Muslims feel seen and accepted.
His tragic death is a great loss, but his legacy will continue to inspire people around the world.
