The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Professor Usman Yusuf, the former Executive Secretary of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS). He was taken into custody on January 29, 2025, over allegations of corruption and misuse of public funds.
Professor Usman Yusuf is accused of awarding contracts to his family members and inflating the NHIS budget while he was in office from 2016 to 2017. The EFCC believes that these actions led to the mismanagement of public funds meant for Nigeria’s healthcare system.
On February 3, 2025, Professor Yusuf appeared in court before Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Kuje, Abuja. The EFCC filed a five-count charge against him, which included:
Embezzlement (stealing public money)
Giving unfair advantages to himself and others
Misusing government funds
He pleaded not guilty to all charges.
After his court appearance, his lawyers asked that he remain in EFCC custody while they prepare his bail application. However, the judge ruled that he should be sent to Kuje Prison until his next court hearing on February 12, 2025.
The EFCC continues its fight against corruption in Nigeria. This case is another example of how public officials are being held accountable for their actions. If found guilty, Professor Yusuf could face serious punishment, including jail time.
